Application Principles

Admission of international candidates to undergraduate programs at Istanbul University is based on İÜYÖS scores ONLY. Istanbul University does not accept the YÖS scores obtained from other universities in Turkey. The eligibility criteria in order to take the İÜYÖS exam is as follows:

All the applications are eligible on condition that the applicants are either final year students or graduates and the applicants who have the following requirements will be accepted.

1.    Those who have a foreign nationality,
2.    Those who were born as Turkish citizens but later were permitted by the Ministry of the Interior of Turkey to cancel their Turkish citizenship, including that of their underage children who would be registered in the document of renouncing Turkish citizenship and who could certify that they have obtained the document regarding the Exercise of Given Rights pursuant to the Turkish Nationality Law, (The 7th article of the Turkish Nationality Law numbered 5901 prescribes that “(1) an infant born from the marriage of a mother or a father having Turkish citizenship inside or outside Turkey is a Turkish citizen”; applicants who would like to apply for the quotas of foreign admission should further review the Turkish Nationality Law.)
3.    Those who used to have a foreign citizenship but later have acquired Turkish citizenship/those who have a dual citizenship under these circumstances,
4.    Amongst the articles below:
a. Those who have Turkish citizenship and have completed the last three years of their secondary education in a foreign country except Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) (including the applicants who completed their secondary education in Turkish schools in a foreign country except TRNC) before 01/02/2013,
b. Those who started and completed their secondary education in a foreign country except Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) after 01/02/2013 (including the applicants who completed their secondary education in Turkish schools in a foreign country except TRNC),
5.    Those who have TRNC citizenship, reside in TRNC, have completed secondary education in TRNC and have obtained GCE AL degrees (The General Certificate of Education – Advanced Level), and those who have or will have GCE AL degree after registering and getting education in the colleges or high schools in other countries between 2005 and 2010.

Furthermore, international exams such as SAT, ACT, ABITUR, IB etc. are not acceptable, when applying to undergraduate programs at Istanbul University.
PostgraduateInternational candidates who want to apply to postgraduate programs at Istanbul University do not require exams such as ALES, GRE, etc.

For a master's degree candidate’s GPA must be at least 65/100 and for PhD at least 75/100 which is made up of 50% bachelor's and 50% master's GPA. Candidates also need to submit two academic reference letters along with their applications.

UndergraduateInternational candidates who have taken İÜYÖS exam require to score at least 40/100 in order to study at a formal education program and 30/100 in order to study at an open and distance education program.

Furthermore, placements take place based on country quotas. Maximum 20% of an undergraduate program’s international quota can be filled by the candidates from the same country of origin.

Country quotas are not applicable to African countries and Indonesia.
PostgraduateInternational candidates are ranked by institutes according to their GPA, reference letters are taken into consideration as well.

Those who come to study or currently are studying in Turkey as an international student;

1.    Must obtain the necessary documents (Foreign Identification Number etc.)
2.    Must receive a residence permit from Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Migration Management. (within one month after the entrance with student visa).
3.    Are obliged to submit Student Certificate to the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management every year based on the residence permit that is taken from Provincial Directorate of Migration Management during the study.
4.    Must notify the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management within the legally required time period regarding their Educational Status (Change the Faculty, Department, etc.).
5.    Must notify the Directorate of Student Affairs within 10 days about the changes of personal details, (marital status etc.).
6.    Those who wish to extend their residence permit during their education must have the Provincial Directorate of Immigration Office certify that they continue their education 60 days before the end of the written period of permit of residence or within 10 days after the legal date on condition that they still continue their education.
7.    Those who lost their residence permit or passport documents must apply to official bureaus within 10 days to renew them.
8.    Those who change telephone numbers, residential addresses or educational institutions are obliged to report to the local Provincial Directorate of Immigration offices (both the one that they moved and the one they left) within the 20 working days.



UndergraduateInternational students who have been enrolled into an undergraduate program must prove their Turkish proficiency in order to start their studies. You can submit one of the following as proof of your Turkish proficiency:

1.    A sufficient score in the exam conducted by Istanbul University Foreign Languages Department
2.    A proficiency certificate issued by Istanbul University Language Center
3.    A proficiency certificate issued by TÖMER courses in Turkey
4.    A proficiency certificate issued by Yunus Emre Institutes abroad
PostgraduateInternational students, who have been admitted to a master’s or PhD program, are allowed for two years to learn the language of the program if they do not have proficiency in that language. They are expected to learn the language of the instruction within the given time, otherwise they would end up having their seat lost and admission rescinded. International students who have been admitted to a postgraduate program that teaches in English do not have to study at Turkish preparatory school.
